Notes for Benjmin S. Cary: Benjamin Swan Carey
Captain Carey, as he was familiarly known, was born in Hartland August 12, 1801. He died April 12th 1878. He was born and reared on the farm now occupied by Alfred Bell and lived there till he was twenty-five years old. January 18th, 1826, he was married to Mary Hill of Hartland and began housekeeping on the farm where he lived until his death. Mary Hill was the daughter of Roswell Hill whose farm joined Capt. Carey’s homestead. Mrs. Carey died August 7th, 1870. The couple lived
together 44 1/2 years. Four children survive them. Mary A., wife of
William Hutchinson of Pomfret;
Ruth E., unmarried who has always lived with her father; Jane L. wife of
Arthur Kneen and
Addie A., wife of George S. Marcy, both of the latter being located on
Hartland Hill within two miles of the old
homestead.
October 10th, 1871, Capt. Carey was married to Mrs. Loisa Thomas of
Hartland who died the 25th of May 1872. March 12th, 1873, he was married
to Mrs. Abigail Kneen of Hartland who survives him.
As a citizen, he was punctual and faithful in his discharge of every
trust. As a neighbor, he was kind and accomodating. As a farmer, he had
but few equals. His work was done thoroughly and in season. He was
patient and exact in carrying out the details of his farming operation
and being a man of large stature, great physical power, strong common
sense and much energy, he succeeded at this, his life work and wrung
from the soil a competence. He was eminently social in his habits and
intercourse with society generally but loved home and friends ardently
and was ever ready to sacrifice his own convenience to make them
comfortable and happy. His integrity was never questioned. He lived a
quiet, unobtrusive way, with but few incidents and accidents to
interrupt the ordinary routine of his life. He shrank from public life -
hated shams and was fully content with his lot. The poor and distresses
will sadly miss his kind gentle face, his good advice and his bounties.
The whole community will mourn the loss of an upright, a Just man.
Deaths
In Hartland, August 7th, Mary, wife of Benjamin S. Cary, aged 64 years
and 10 months.
By sudden death has passed away she who was greatly esteemed by a large
circle of relatives and acquaintances. An affectionate wife and mother,
a beloved neighbor and friend has fallen, leaving those who knew her in
sorrow and tears to mourn the inestimable loss they have sustained:
“As the winged arrow flies, Speeding the mark to find, As the lightning
from the sky
Darts, and leaves no trace behind. Swiftly thus our fleeting days Bear
us down life’s rapid stream. Upward, Lord, our spirits rise.
All below is but a dream.”
Transplanted Death is sad and gloomy. Nature revolts at the thought. But
we must meet it. Willing or unwilling; eyes open or eyes closed, we must
meet death meet it as is seizes upon our friends and meet it as our own
implacable and resistless assailant. It is true that there is no use in
brooding in sorrow over an evil, while it is yet distant; but it is
equally true that where it is possible so to anticipate an evil as to
ameliorate it or to associate it with things joyous, then as bids us
look forward......................
